Changes Ahead

What’s new with LoCo Arts?

LoCo Arts is undergoing some changes! In June the Afterschool Program closed its doors after five years of creative fun and learning with elementary school-aged children in Giles County. Later this year, we will watch with excitement as the Mayapple School leaves it’s incubation phase at the Newport Community Center under LoCo Arts and transitions to a new location as an independent entity.

While we were sad to see these programs go, we are also looking forward to moving LoCo Arts in a new direction. Under the guidance of a newly formed board of directors, we are re-envisioning our place in the New River Valley. With a continued commitment to our mission of strengthening our community through creative education and cultural exploration through the arts, we are looking for new and innovative ways to involve all ages and backgrounds through art, ideas, and social engagement.

Our most recent project was a collaboration with the New River Valley Juvenile Detention Home, where residents attended a series of weekly experiential art workshops. Art for Tomorrow focused on individual self-exploration and expression, collaboration, as well as social practice and one’s ability to play a part in their own community. The program used creative education and therapeutic arts to increase participant self-efficacy and confidence, social skills and sense of purpose.

We hope you are as excited for this new energy as we are. You can support this next chapter through tax-deductible contributions online or by mail (click “Give Now” at the top of the page). If you or someone you know would be interested in volunteering their time through program support or board service, contact us at Thank you as always for your investment in our community through LoCo Arts!
