What’s Your Medium gets a little serious about artmaking and starts to tap into unique personal interest. This camp explores an array of different creative materials with the intention that your child will add at least one to their list of favorite things. Materials and techniques explored in the past include acrylic and watercolor paint; ink, charcoal and pastel drawing; mixed media collage; wire sculpture; cardboard and wood assemblage; experimental writing; food art; found object and natural material eco-arts projects and more - if you can use it to make art, we will explore it. Allow your children to see what they connect with.

This summer, The Mayapple School will offer summer camp sessions with a focus on nature and art. Each day, campers will learn about a different topic and participate in related activities, including art. For example, one day might include songs and stories about water, followed by creating a mini water cycle (terrarium). Another day could focus on leaves and trees, followed by a related printmaking or paper making experience. Greenbrier Creek will certainly play a role at our summer camp, and campers will need to use their ingenuity on boat making day. Of course, each day will also provide plenty of your child’s favorite: PLAY! Campers can cook in our mud kitchen, build with sticks and loose parts, and cool down in the creek with friends daily. If your child thrives outside, with plenty of creative, hands-on experience, this is her camp! SEEDlings at The Mayapple School is appropriate for children who are fully self-toileting and are ready to benefit from a group experience. If you love the idea, but not the dates, check out New River Valley’s original SEEDlings Summer Camp at SEEDS: Blacksburg Nature Center.
